I always say the hardest part about family portraits is just simply getting everyone in the same place at the same time! We just love it when families carve out time to capture the gang when this rare occasion occurs.  During our extended family sessions we start with the more traditional posed groups and move into fun, casual play on the beach. With so many special spots on the Maine coast the locations are endless! Be sure to take advantage of the time you all have together and capture those memories for generations to enjoy. The best part about family photos is that they become more and more valuable with time!

There is no denying how much we LOVE beach portraits but it’s even more exciting when the family has a special connection to the beach where we photograph! Generations of this family have gathered right in this very spot, at this very beach cottage and we were thrilled to capture just a glimpse of this moment in their family time at Wells Beach. And what a night!

Yay! Let’s talk family group photos! It sure does seem like this is always an area of stress for couples and a concern for the wedding timeline. We know that these photos are so super important to you but we also know that they do not need to be the main focus for your photography. We thought it would be good to share how we approach family photos so our couples and families are never feeling stressed or missing out on the celebration!

Step 1: We communicate with you BEFORE your wedding day!  We talk about who your family is (by first name of course), all the different groups we will be photographing and where your photos will take place; minimal walking and a non distracting background in the shade is always our favorite. So on your wedding day, you don’t have to worry or try to remember any of this and we can be super efficient.

Step 2: We have a system. We organize our photo list in advance so there are minimal moving parts. This keeps us all moving quickly and gets everyone off to the celebration quickly. We like to keep our family group portraits to 10 minutes or less. Sounds good right?

Step 3: Keep it simple. Let’s talk about what photos you will actually want. Don’t use that check list you found someplace! Your wedding isn’t a checklist kinda event! Who are your people?! What photos do you want to display in your home or include in your album? Are you (or your parents) sending a holiday card or thank you cards and want a photo? You do not, I repeat, you do not need to do a million different combinations of groups. Let’s focus on what is most important and get to the celebration! Because that right there is where we get to capture all those candid moments and where you get to have a cocktail.

Jordan had the pleasure of meeting Katie and John at John’s family home for an e-session before their wedding day.  Their love of the area and the coast made it clear The Cliff House in Ogunquit was the perfect location for their wedding celebration. Being right on the rocks, that close to the water, celebrating with the people closest to you is really about as good as it gets! These two are so loved! Listening to some of the most heart felt toasts and seeing everyone come together to bring the party to the dance floor, it was obvious they were all together to celebrate Katie and John. I always say that the hardest part about family photos is just getting everyone together in the same place! When everyone lives in a different part of the country it can be so hard! So when Kelly reached out about family photos for her extended family during their visit to Kennebunkport I was excited! I met them right at the home they rented on the water (this location!) and we gathered for some fun and low key photos on the beach. What could be better than family photos on the beach after sipping some wine around the fire together!

Meet Sara, Miles and their adorable boys! We spent a little time together on Parson’s Beach in Kennebunk this Spring taking a few casual family portraits. I have had the pleasure of working with Sara on many photography projects but being able to photograph her family was by far my favorite! She is the artists behind Sara Fitz, a watercolor stationery studio based in York, Maine. Her work is classically New England in style and is highly coveted in the wedding world for her amazing invitation sets. She recently relaunched the company with her husband after a short break to spend time raising her boys and I was able to photograph all of her new designs, her gorgeous studio and her family for the website relaunch! (more on all of that in another blog post) Today I wanted to share their family beach session. It’s so important to keep sessions easy for the kids making time to play, explore, and just be themselves! It’s at the heart of what we love about beach portraits!
